Karmelo Anthony’s Self-Defense Claim Falls Apart As Jury Convicts Him In Fatal Track Meet Stabbing

A tragic moment at a Texas high school track meet is now moving through the legal system. Karmelo Anthony, the teen accused of stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf to death during a Frisco ISD track event back in April, has been formally indicted on a first-degree murder charge. The Collin County grand jury handed down the indictment on Tuesday, officially setting the wheels in motion for a criminal trial that could lead to life behind bars.

Anthony was just 17 when the incident happened on April 2 at Kuykendall Stadium, but under Texas law, he’s treated as an adult. He was taken into custody immediately after the stabbing and later released on a reduced bond with house arrest conditions. Now 18, Anthony is staring down one of the state’s most serious charges.

Investigators say the deadly encounter happened near the 50-yard line under a tent in the bleachers. Surveillance footage released by Frisco ISD shows the moment things turned violent. Around 9:55 a.m., movement under the tent appears to show an altercation taking place. People nearby scattered while others rushed in. A few minutes later, emergency crews pulled up to help Austin Metcalf, who was still in the bleachers. The footage also showed the moment a knife was found higher up in the stands, behind where the fight took place.

Karmelo’s legal team maintains that their client may have acted in self-defense and says the full story will come out during the trial. Meanwhile, the prosecution is moving forward with its case, saying the evidence presented to the grand jury warranted the murder charge. The District Attorney’s office noted the impact the case has had on the community, pointing to how rare and devastating it is when violence like this erupts at a school function.

The next legal steps include assigning a trial judge and setting a court date for Anthony’s first appearance. There’s no timeline yet for when that will happen, but the trial process is now officially underway.
