McDonald’s is heating up breakfast this summer with a spicy twist to a fan-favorite. Starting July 8th, the iconic Egg McMuffin gets a fiery makeover featuring the chain’s bold Spicy Pepper Sauce.
For a limited time only, the Spicy Egg McMuffin will feature the traditional combo of melty cheese, a freshly cracked egg, Canadian bacon, and a toasted English Muffin now kicked up a notch with a zesty layer of pepper sauce.
The spicy upgrade doesn’t stop there. Customers can also grab a Spicy Sausage McMuffin or the Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg. While McDonald’s hasn’t confirmed how long these options will stick around, they’ve clarified it’s for a “limited time.”
This fiery breakfast drop is part of the chain’s ongoing celebration of the Egg McMuffin’s 50th anniversary. According to McDonald’s, the original was created in 1971 when executive Herb Peterson attempted to replicate Eggs Benedict. When packaged Hollandaise didn’t make the cut, he opted for cheese and Canadian bacon, crafting a breakfast sandwich using a Teflon ring to give the egg its round shape. It debuted in 1972 for just 63 cents and went nationwide by 1975.
This summer’s menu updates also include sweet additions like the Blueberry & Crème Pie and HERSHEY’S S’mores McFlurry, both available for a limited time.
Whether you’re craving heat or sweet, McDonald’s is stacking up the breakfast game for a tasty July.
