Are Mary Janes Back?

Once reserved for schoolgirls, tea parties, and church pews, Mary Janes have been a fashion staple for over a century—but not always a relevant one. Their origin goes back to the early 1900s, and they’ve had spikes of popularity in the ’60s, ’90s, and early 2000s. But the last few years? Crickets.

Then A$AP Rocky happened.

When the Harlem-born rapper stepped out in red patent leather Mary Janes, paired with a sharp grey suit and cool confidence, he didn’t just wear a shoe—he reintroduced it to a whole new generation.

The red Mary Janes in question were glossy, double-strapped, and sat atop a block heel—bold, bright, and not trying to blend in. Word is, they came from a limited-edition AWGE x Christian Louboutin collab, first previewed during his AWGE fashion show in Paris.
Online, the reactions came fast. Some joked he looked like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, others saluted him for breaking fashion rules once again. But one thing was clear: everybody noticed, and suddenly Mary Janes were trending—again.

Rocky isn’t just a rapper with good taste. He’s a fashion disruptor who’s made a career out of blending gender-fluid silhouettes, archival designer pieces, and streetwear into one iconic image. Whether it’s kilts, pearls, or high-heeled Mary Janes, when he wears it, it becomes the moment.

So, Are They Back?

Yes—and not just because Mary Janes are cute or nostalgic. They’re back because A$AP Rocky made them hot again. His fearless style took a forgotten shoe and turned it into a conversation starter. Now designers, influencers, and fashion lovers are scrambling to rework and restock the silhouette.

Mary Janes didn’t just reemerge—they got resurrected. And whether you’re lacing them up in red patent leather or rocking them vintage, just know you’ve got A$AP Rocky to thank for the glow-up.
