Derrick Groves, the last remaining New Orleans inmate on the run, has been captured in Georgia.
Authorities confirmed that Groves was taken into custody after a tense standoff with U.S. Marshals at a home in Southwest Atlanta. Law enforcement officials located him near the corner of Campbellton Road and Honeysuckle Lane, ending a months-long manhunt that began after a large-scale escape from the Orleans Parish jail in May.
Groves was one of ten inmates who escaped the facility on May 16th. The other fugitives, Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, Gary Price, D’Kenan Dennis, Corey Boyd, Lenton Vanburen Jr., Jermaine Donald, Leo Tate, and Antoine Massey, have all since been recaptured.
Before his escape, Groves had recently been convicted on three counts of attempted second-degree murder. Sources confirmed he is the grandson of Kim Groves, a 32-year-old mother of three whose 1994 murder in the Lower 9th Ward became one of New Orleans’ most infamous police corruption cases. The killing was orchestrated by former NOPD officer Len Davis.
Investigators also revealed that Groves’ girlfriend, Darriana Burton, played a role in his escape. Burton is now in custody and charged with conspiracy to commit simple escape after allegedly using the jail’s iPad communication system to help coordinate Groves’ breakout.
Burton previously worked for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office but was terminated in 2023 for allegedly bringing contraband into the jail. While she completed a diversion program that led to earlier charges being dropped, this latest incident has renewed scrutiny of jail security measures and inmate communication access.
