On Saturday evening, defensive backs Chauncey Scissum and Corey Winfield were stabbed multiple times on campus by 20-year-old Naesean Howard, who used to play safety for the Syracuse Orange. Howard was dismissed from the football team as a freshman in 2014, but recently re-enrolled at the school.
The incident occurred at an outdoor barbecue. Chauncey Scissum was stabbed near the jaw and would have lost his life if it wasn’t for Corey Winfield who helped push Howard away. Scissum had just had surgery and was unable to properly protect himself from Howard. When Howard came after Scissum again, Winfield got between them. In his attempt to help a friend, Winfield was stabbed in the chest, ribs and arms.
“Chauncey couldn’t hit him at all,” the friend said. “Chauncey had one arm. At the end of the day, if there is a big savior in this whole situation, it’s Corey Winfield. He put his life on the line for his best friend.”
A witness says that on the night of the incident, Howard attacked Scissum out of nowhere. They claim there was no warning or no altercation that lead up to the incident.
“Neasean, in that moment, was under rage. Everybody was out there chilling. No one was drunk,” the source said. “It literally just happened out of nowhere. It came out of nowhere. There was no argument before. It just happened.”
The injuries in the report today, conflict with what was allegedly on the police report. According to a criminal complaint, Howard stabbed Winfield on his lower right back, upper right chest, and left abdomen and left wrist. Howard then stabbed Scissum on the right side of his neck, right upper chest, left shoulder and bottom lip.
At this point, the question still remains — Why?
