New details are emerging about the stabbing of two Syracuse football players on campus. On Saturday evening, defensive backs Chauncey Scissum and Corey Winfield were stabbed at an outdoor barbecue. Police have accused Naesean Howard, 20, a former Syracuse safety who was dismissed from the team as a freshman in 2014 and recently re-enrolled at the school. Howard has not been convicted of anything.
According to a witness who spoke to the Daily Orange, the student newspaper, the attack came out of nowhere. The witness said there was no argument or warning beforehand and that nobody at the gathering had been drinking.
The witness also described how Winfield stepped in when Howard went after Scissum, who had recently had surgery and was limited in how he could defend himself. A friend credited Winfield with saving Scissum’s life, saying he put himself in harm’s way for his best friend.
The witness account differs somewhat from the injuries listed in a criminal complaint. According to the complaint, Winfield was stabbed in the lower right back, upper right chest, left abdomen and left wrist, and Scissum was stabbed in the right side of the neck, right upper chest, left shoulder and bottom lip.
It is still unclear what led to the attack. Baller Alert will keep you posted as officials share more.
