Tattoo My Name On You So I Know It’s Real…

Tattoo art is a way of expression. When a person puts permanent ink to their body, it’s usually to show their adoration or appreciation for something. Tattoos hold a meaning, either hidden or directly. What would you do if your significant other asked that you tattooed their name on your body if he/she did the same?

I was in this situation once. While me & my son’s father were still together (and in love) he thought it would be great to get a tattoo. I’m not new to ink, I’ve been inked since I was 18 and we had been together for a few years at the time, why not? Well, I thought on it for a while. I’ve always been superstitious and believed that tattooing someone’s name on your body is bad luck. I was always told that once there’s as tattoo, the relationship ends. I wasn’t ready for the relationship to end, nor was I ready to invest in laser removal. Who would’ve thought it would cost so much to remove a tattoo when I can get a tattoo for just 30 bucks? Yikes!

The conversation on us getting each other’s names tatted didn’t really last long. We eventually stopped talking about it. I never said no, yet I never said yes. One day out of the blue he comes home and what do I see? My name is inked on his chest, right above his heart….and it was HIDEOUS! It was awful, I was repulsed! It wasn’t the name itself that was ugly, but all the extra that the “tattoo artist” was trying to do to it. He tried to free-hand a picture of a diamond ring around my name and it was just all bad. It was at this point that two things came to mind. 1) He clearly got this tattoo in someone’s kitchen and 2) Maybe getting a tattoo wasn’t such a great idea.

Needless to say, I didn’t tell him the tat was awful. I appreciated the fact that he went as far as to get it done, it meant a lot. It was the thought that truly counted because that thing was truly awful! How long did we stay together after that tattoo? I say maybe 6 months. Yep, a relationship that had lasted 3 years only lasted another 6 months after the tattoo was introduced. Was it the tat that cursed us? Who knows! Luckily, I never got it. Does he regret getting it? I don’t know, never asked.

Would I eventually get a man’s name tattooed on me? Nope, can’t say I will. I don’t mind matching tattoos, symbols or things of that nature, but I can never truly see me getting a man’s name on me.
