Maryland School Bans Students From Wearing Redskins Gear

Green Acres School in North Bethesda (Maryland) has told students to leave their #Washington #Redskins apparel at home when football season starts.

The school’s head, Neal Brown, requested in a letter that parents not send their children to the private school with the team’s apparel or logo.

The letter stated that the the term ‘Redskin’ was “offensive and deeply insulting”. It is a racial slur that offends a group of people. He continued, “Similarly the team’s logo also can reasonably be viewed as racially demeaning. At best, the image is an ethnic stereotype that promotes cultural misunderstanding; at worst, it is intensely derogatory. I feel strongly that wearing clothing with the name of our local football team or the logo — that those were really against our school’s mission and our diversity statement.”

The franchise has had the name Redskins since 1933 when the team was in #Boston. There has been a recent movement to get the name changed.
