19 years ago today, Lauryn Hill’s debut album ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’, debuted at #1 on the #Billboard200 charts, only confirming how iconic this body of work was.
The album, which gave us the classic hit ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’ and earned Ms. Hill five Grammys (including Album of the Year), is a staple in music history. Not only was Hill’s sound unparalleled–combining neo-soul and hip-hop, with reggae undertones–but it also catapulted her career in a way we could have never imagined.
Today, it still exists as an influence for artists of the future, as Hill is one of few to receive such tremendous accolades from only one solo project. It also is a perfect of example of her fierce lyricism, arguably making her one of the top female emcees of our time.
