It has been days since Cam Newton hit the dab on the Titans after a touchdown, and people everywhere still have something to say about it. First off, let’s be clear that Cam was not the first to do the dab and he most certainly will not be the last. He isn’t even the first big time athlete to do it…LeBron was seen doing it just last month during a preseason game. But for whatever reason, Cam’s dab on Sunday basically broke the internet. Some people loved it, some people hated it, but either way, it shouldn’t have been as big of a deal as it was made out to be.
Cam took some time out today during a press conference to talk about his dab and other touchdown celebrations on the field. “It takes me to a happy place,” he said. “I remember when I was in high school I used to look up to guys and mimic them. Now they’re doing the things I do. People are looking at you whether you want them or not. When I see people do the celebration I do, it makes me happy.”
As we reported yesterday, a Titans fan, who took her young daughter to the game on Sunday, sent a scathing open letter to Cam about why she thought his celebration was offensive and inappropriate. “Everybody is entitled to their own opinion,” Newton said about her letter. “I can’t fault her for that. It is what it is. If she feels offended, I’ll apologize to her, but at the end of the day I am who I am.”
“I’m not doing it to be disrespectful to nobody,” Newton added. “I’m more so just doing it just to shine light and get people a smile and having fun doing what I do.”
So there you have it, he just wants to be happy and make other people happy…let the man live!
