There are many things that can be tough to work through in relationships, but conflicting political views seem to be a sure way to cause a rift. Even in my immediate family, my parents didn’t agree on politics and because of this, we hardly ever discussed them. Their relationship didn’t end up working out, but what may be a deal breaker for some, is not for others. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 2016, the #Wishbone app surveyed more than 10,000 teens and Millennials in the U.S. and found that 47 percent wouldn’t date someone with different political beliefs, but 53 percent would. While you don’t have to agree with all of your partner’s viewpoints and ideas, you should still respect them. Instead of butting heads over political parties, try establishing a politics-free zone with your partner or finding a common enemy you both can channel your frustrations on. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Different political beliefs can also be a way for you to get to know your partner better. You should try to understand their morals and values that led to their support of their chosen party instead of criticizing them over it. Recognize that differences can actually be interesting and fun sometimes. Your perspective may even change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re dating someone with opposing political beliefs, it’s important to remember that their ideas are just a part of who they are. Don’t lose sight of what matters most. But if you decide the relationship can’t work or you couldn’t date someone with conflicting views, there’s nothing wrong with that either. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
