A probationary Detroit firefighter was fired after bringing a watermelon with a pink bow to his new firehouse, according to Fox2 Detroit.
Robert, 41, a new member of Engine 55 at Joy and Southfield, reportedly wanted to bring a gift for the veterans on his team. Fox2 reported the crew would typically bring small treats like donuts, but Robert brought a large watermelon instead. About 90 percent of the squad is African American, and Fox2 reported that many members found the gesture offensive. One firefighter on the team, Patrick, told the station it was probably a bad call.
Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said the department conducted a thorough investigation and decided to end the employment of the probationary firefighter. Jones said there is “zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior” in the Detroit Fire Department, describing the Sept. 30, 2017 incident as conduct deemed offensive and racially insensitive.
Not everyone on the crew agreed with the decision. Tadarius, another member of the team, posted a photo with coworkers on social media in support of Robert, saying it came from good intentions. Robert has maintained that the gift was not meant to offend anyone.
