Drake is putting his money where Joe Budden’s mouth is. As a guest on “ESPN Radio’s Be Honest with Cari Champion”, Budden said that, via Instagram DM, Drake bet him $10,000 to release 25 diss tracks before his Summer Sixteen Tour dates at Madison Square Garden arrive. He also invited Budden to come see the show.
The initial riff between the two rappers came about after Joe Budden said on his “I’ll Name This Podcast Later” show that upon listening to Drake’s “Views” album, he felt the Toronto rapper sounded “uninspired.” Shortly after, blogs ran with the 15 second podcast clip, writing several think-pieces that were sure to get Drizzy’s attention. It wasn’t long before French Montana teased his Drake assisted single “No Shopping” on Instagram, cutting the clip just after Drake made reference to Joe Budden’s 2003 debut “Pump It Up.” This sparked Budden to begin unleashing diss tracks aimed at the 6 God.
During his talk with Cari Champion, Budden discussed the DM he received from Drake. He wouldn’t reveal too much information, and admits to being unsure of the context.
“I’m only not putting it out cause I’m a real n*gga. You just don’t move like that, you don’t screenshot…” Budden says. “He started off with, ‘I would like to formally invite you to one of my four Madison Square Garden shows Aug. 4th. You and however many people you’d like to bring.’ And after that it said, ‘I bet you can’t release 25 diss records between now and then.’ So then it was the laughing emoji. And then he followed that with, ‘If you can, I will give you $10,000.’ And then LOL and a bunch of exclamation points. I didn’t know how to take that.”
With this information we can expect to hear more and more Budden diss tracks for a little while. The list will just continue to grow.
