A New York Senator Has A Bill That Would Make Calling The Police On Innocent Black People A Hate Crime

Innocent Black people have been having the police called on them lately for performing normal, everyday activities. The epidemic has raised such controversy that the phrase “while Black” has been coined by media. But now, a New York State Senator wants to make calling the police on innocent Black people a hate  crime.

Whether you’re waiting on your friends in Starbucks, selling water, sleeping in your college dorm or shopping in a mall – you may have the police called on you because you’re Black. At least that’s what society keeps seeing in media. It’s unfair, unjust and simply not right and those are the same feelings New York State Sen. Jesse Hamilton (D) felt when he proposed a new bill that would make calling the police on innocent Black people a hate crime.

“Waiting for your friends at a Starbucks is not a 911 call – it’s a call of intimidation,” Hamilton said. “That’s gonna be a hate crime. This pattern of calling the police on black people going about their business and participating in the life of our country has to stop.” Hamilton says he too had the police called on him, by a Trump supporter while he was campaigning.

If the bill goes through, the conversation on whether or not the 911 call was created with a racial bias will be brought up– that decision will be made by law enforcement. One Brooklyn resident said that decision-making process wouldn’t be totally fair. “We’re putting responsibility in the hands of an institution that’s really predatory,” Milan Powell said. “I wouldn’t feel comfortable with that.”
