Aaliyah was one in a million.

It’s been 17 long years since the tragic passing of young pop icon, Aaliyah, following a 2001 plane crash that claimed the singer’s life, along with eight others.

Though Aaliyah is no longer with us, her influence lives on. A trailer blazer of the culture, Aaliyah was responsible for setting trends in music, fashion, and even on the big screen.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, Aaliyah was involved with music at a very young age. After appearing on Star Search at only 11, her career skyrocketed. By 15, she released her debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothin but a Number,” which would go multiplatinum.

By 1996, Aaliyah matured into an entirely new sound. For her sophomore album, “One In A Million,” Aaliyah collaborated with songwriters and mega-producers Missy Elliott and Timbaland to make R&B history. Together, the trio developed a close relationship and a number of hits. Aaliyah was nominated for a Grammy for her song “Try Again,” which was the soundtrack single for her acting debut in the film, “Romeo Must Die.”

From the big screen to the streets, Aaliyah’s style inspired young women to experiment in their closets as well. A fan of baggy pants, one shoulder looks, and sexy street-wear, her fashion trends remain a classic today. Aaliyah’s famous Tommy Hilfiger overalls, boxer briefs and crop tops remind women the power in being comfy and sexy.

Celebrities and friends of the late singer have been open about the grief surrounded by losing the star at such a young age. Missy Elliott took to Twitter earlier today to express her emotions regarding the 17 year anniversary.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“Aaliyah (Babygirl) I can only imagine how great you would be today winning Oscars & creating sick music and still setting fashion trends!” She goes on to say “your fans been holding it down for you❤️ you’ll always be One in A Million.”

We miss you Babygirl!
