The death of 20 year old Gloria, a South African citizen who lived in McKinney, Texas, has sparked a wave of discussion on social media, and police have responded to the speculation.
Heavy.com reports that earlier this week a Facebook user shared a post saying Gloria was found dead at her home on July 12 by her housemate after being missing for a few days. The post questioned why her death had received so little attention and tagged the Collin County NAACP and several news outlets. It picked up more than 250 comments and was shared more than 1,600 times.
The Collin County NAACP responded on Twitter that it was waiting for details, including autopsy results, scene photos, a statement from the housemate and a handwriting analysis of a letter. The group said it would not accept a single statement as the full story and would seek justice.
On July 23, the McKinney Police Department posted a statement on Facebook. Police said they typically do not comment on suicides, but because of the public attention they wanted to correct inaccuracies. According to the department, Gloria’s body was found by her 19 year old housemate, who has fully cooperated with the investigation. Police said all evidence so far leads investigators to believe her death was a suicide, that the Medical Examiner’s findings are still pending, and that the preliminary examination did not uncover anything that contradicts what was found at the home. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
Some people online said the police account did not add up to them. Others asked for patience while the official findings are completed. No one has been accused of wrongdoing.
