A 2003 cold case has resurfaced after authorities say DNA evidence linked a Michigan woman named Antoinette to the deaths of two newborn twin boys.
According to the Chicago Tribune, as reported by the New York Daily News, the infants were found dead in a trash can by a garbage collector 17 years ago near Chicago Midway Airport. Investigators said the babies were born alive, noting their umbilical cords were still attached. Their deaths were ruled a homicide by asphyxiation.
Authorities said advances in genetic research allowed detectives to obtain DNA from the 2003 scene in 2018 and compare it with a sample from Antoinette. They said the testing matched.
Antoinette was pulled over for a traffic violation and taken into custody on Thursday. On Friday she was charged with two counts of first degree murder. She is presumed innocent, and the charges are allegations at this stage.
