A one year old boy was killed outside a Fort Worth area hospital in Texas during an attempted carjacking at a custody exchange, according to police and local reports.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Zayden, his mother Bailey and his father Shea were meeting in the parking lot of Texas Health Huguley Hospital when a man approached and tried to get into Bailey’s car. Police say the suspect, Nico Lorenzo Dela-Fuente, got into the vehicle while Bailey was holding her son. Zayden’s father climbed in after him to try to stop the theft, and the two struggled while the car was in reverse. Police say the car struck the father and child and both fell. Police allege the suspect then drove forward, ran over the child and crashed into a tree.

Police say officers caught Dela-Fuente after a brief foot chase. He has been charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery and was being held at the Fort Worth jail on bonds totaling $600,000. He has not been convicted, and a response from him was not available at the time of publishing.

Zayden was rushed to the emergency room, where he died. Reports say Bailey was recovering in the hospital with injuries that included skull fractures and bleeding in the brain.

Zayden’s grandmother, Vickie, asked the public for prayers for her daughter and Zayden’s dad, saying they witnessed a great deal and need healing. She remembered her grandson as a loving, playful boy who loved to laugh.

The family started a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral and medical costs. As of Monday night it had raised $15,585 toward a $50,000 goal. Zayden would have turned two next month.
