Alabama A&M University issued an emotional retraction Wednesday, correcting an earlier announcement of the death of football player Medrick Burnett Jr. The university confirmed that Burnett, a redshirt freshman linebacker, is alive and remains in stable condition at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.

Burnett sustained a head injury during an October game against Alabama State and has been hospitalized ever since. On Tuesday evening, the university’s athletic department announced his death, attributing the information to an immediate family member. The school now says that announcement was premature.

“We express our immediate regret for disseminating false information; however, we hold complete joy in knowing that Medrick remains in stable condition,” Alabama A&M stated.

Burnett, a native of Lakewood, California, transferred to Alabama A&M from Grambling State University in Louisiana. According to Alabama A&M’s athletics website, he played in seven games this season, recording five tackles, including three against Austin Peay.

The premature announcement of Burnett’s death sent shockwaves through the college football community. However, the correction has brought hope to those following his journey.
The retraction has brought relief and renewed prayers for Burnett’s recovery. Fans, teammates, and supporters from across the nation have rallied behind him, offering financial support and messages of encouragement.

The university pledged to keep the public updated on Burnett’s recovery and reiterated its commitment to supporting him and his family during this challenging time.
