Alabama Senator Advocates for New Bill to Establish Federal Database for Pregnancy Tracking & Child Support During Pregnancy

Alabama Senator Katie Britt,  has put forward significant legislation titled the “More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed” or MOMS Act. This new proposal has garnered support from Republican Senators Marco Rubio of Florida and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota. The MOMS Act is stirring discussions with its approach to supporting pregnant women, albeit with specific exclusions targeting abortion-related services.

The core of the MOMS Act is to create support mechanisms for pregnant women, including allowing child support claims to begin during pregnancy. This initiative marks a departure from traditional guidelines which initiate such support post-birth. The legislation proposes adjusting the terminology from “child” to “unborn child,” thus enabling prospective enforcement of child support from the point of conception.

Additionally, the act plans to establish a national database through a newly created website, Pregnancy.gov. This platform is intended to list vetted pregnancy care providers. However, the act explicitly excludes any entity involved in performing, inducing, referring for, or counseling in favor of abortions from receiving any federal funding or being listed on the site. This exclusion extends to many OB-GYNs and sexual health clinics nationwide, potentially limiting the range of services accessible through the proposed database.

Critics, including former Kentucky Senate candidate Amy McGrath, argue that the proposed database could serve as a national registry of pregnant women, with the government potentially using it to track personal health data such as menstrual cycles. McGrath expressed her concerns on social media platform X, highlighting the implications of such a database on privacy and women’s rights.

The legislation also aims to establish a directory of “pregnancy support centers,” often referred to as crisis pregnancy centers. These centers are controversial for allegedly providing misleading information to deter women from considering abortions. The introduction of this act by Britt, whose home state of Alabama enforces some of the strictest abortion regulations in the U.S., aligns with the state’s ongoing legislative direction against abortion.
