For the first time in his celebrated career, the NFL leading quarterback and the cornerstone to the New England Patriots’ six NFL championships, Tom Brady will become a free agent.
Brady, 42, drafted as the 199th overall pick in the 2000 draft, has played all 20 NFL seasons with the Patriots, winning 6 out 9 NFL Super Bowls.
But during his career, Brady has left roughly 60-million-dollars on the negotiating table to ensure the Patriots would surround him with the talent needed to be a dominant team on the field.
But as the March 18 free agency approaches, Brady is now screaming, “Show me the money!”
Many teams around the NFL are licking their chops at the opportunity to meet and woe Brady away from the Patriots.
Even at the age of 42, coaches view Brady as a superhero, a mythical entity that can turn a non-playoff team into a contender and a contender into a Super Bowl team.
It’s being reported that Belichick, the head coach of the Patriots, had a phone conversation with Brady on Tuesday, and the call didn’t go as well as planned.
According to reports, it was the first time Belichick had contacted Brady about his contract situation, and the Patriots’ plans going forward.
While the contract talks may appear to be off to a rocky start, it doesn’t necessarily preclude the team from signing its four-time Super Bowl MVP.
ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported last week that Brady is entering free agency “under the belief he will play somewhere else in 2020”.
“I’ll explore those opportunities whenever they are,” Brady told Football Morning in America. “If it’s the Patriots, great. If that doesn’t work, I don’t know. I just don’t know. I love playing football. I still want to play football. I think I still can play at a championship level. I’ve just got to go do it. I’m motivated to get back to work and training.”
Appearing on ESPN’s Get Up on Friday, Jeremy Fowler revealed that the Titans like their chances to win the war for Brady. He also reported that a team has emerged from the shadows to silently pursue the services of Brady.
“I just spoke with sources on this. I was told the Titans believe they have a pretty good chance in a head-to-head matchup with the Patriots to land Tom Brady,” Fowler said. “I’m also told that there’s a mystery team, a third team, that’s firmly in the mix, all right? So cue the music.”
If Brady does walk away from the Patriots, it would be an unprecedented move that could change the landscape of the NFL.
