Amazon Plans Consumer AR Glasses to Rival Meta by 2027

Amazon is developing a new pair of augmented reality glasses for everyday consumers.

The project, called “Jayhawk,” is expected to include speakers, microphones, a built-in camera, and a full color display in one eye. If plans stay on schedule, the glasses could be released between late 2026 and early 2027.

The company has already been testing similar technology for its delivery workers. Reuters reported last year that Amazon designed special eyewear to help drivers with navigation. Those glasses would show turn by turn directions on a small screen along routes and at each stop.

While both glasses use the same type of display technology, the designs are different. The delivery version is made for function and work use, while the consumer model will be slimmer, lighter, and built for comfort. The Information noted that the consumer glasses will also feature a full color display, unlike the simpler driver model.

Amazon is expected to roll out the delivery worker glasses first. Reports suggest they could launch as early as the second quarter of 2026 with about 100,000 units in the first production run. The consumer version would then follow soon after, giving Amazon time to improve the technology.

This new product line will place Amazon in direct competition with Meta. Meta is expected to show off an updated version of its own AR glasses at its Connect conference next week. Both companies are pushing to lead the market for wearable devices that mix digital tools with everyday life.

If successful, Amazon’s AR glasses could change how people work, shop, and interact with technology.

From guiding drivers on the road to giving consumers a new way to connect with digital content, the glasses show Amazon’s growing focus on the future of augmented reality.
