SlutWalks started in 2011 as a response to a police officer’s remarks that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” Women in Toronto organized the walk to bring awareness to sexual assault and victim shaming. In 2015 Amber Rose kicked off her highly publicized version of the SlutWalk in Los Angeles. She was joined by her mother and hundreds of supporters. This year Amber Rose says the event will be bigger and better.
“It’s going to be much, much bigger and better,” she tells PEOPLE magazine. “Last year people didn’t quite understand what a SlutWalk was. The number one misconception was people assuming that it was a walk to promote prostitution or promiscuity, which is really stupid. That’s the total opposite of what it was.”
This year’s SlutWalk, which is scheduled for October 2016, will include on-site HIV testing, counseling, a fashion show, art installations, celebrity guests and more. “Now a number of famous women are reaching out, wanting to be involved, which is a lot more than we had last year.”
You may recall last year Amber Rose took to Twitter to vent her frustration with a lot of female artists who attempted to charge her $30-$40k to perform at the event. It appears now that they know what it’s all about, they are less reluctant to jump on board.
