Biden Administration Says Free At-Home Covid Tests Will Be Available Starting Monday

It may be easier for you to get your hands on the home COVID-19 test soon. Starting Saturday, Jan. 15, Americans will get the free tests through their private insurance.

Biden’s administration office has launched a program to increase access to testing in the U.S. Residents have complained about the difficulty of finding home tests, and testing sites have long wait times. The new at-home tests will be available through pharmacies, retailers, and online vendors.

Consumers with private insurance can buy home tests online or in stores to qualify. Insurers will either purchase the tests or reimburse people up to $12 for each test. If you need a reimbursement, submit a claim to your insurer because tests will not apply to copays and deductibles.

Also, insurers may have setlists of preferred pharmacies and online retailers, so reaching out to your private insurance will save time and hassle before purchasing any tests. The administration allows multiple tests in a month. Consumers will receive up to eight tests per covered individual each month.

Though finding home tests has been difficult, President Joe Biden doubled the number on Thursday, announcing 1 billion tests to be available. According to private insurers, Medicaid is covering home tests free of charge. However, Medicare still offers free lab testing when ordered by a medical professional.

Unfortunately, insurers are not reimbursing individuals who have bought tests before Jan. 15.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has more information.
