Amerie just confirmed that she’s divorcing her husband, Lenny Nicholson, of 19 years.
During a sit-down on Way Up With Angela Yee at the 2025 BET Awards, Angela assumed Amerie’s relationship was still intact. But the “1 Thing” singer kept it real: “I was, but not now.”
Yee and co-host Jasmine were clearly caught off guard, prompting Amerie to explain. “We’re going through the divorce, but we’ve been separated since 2023,” she said, adding, “not everyone knows that.” She also admitted she’s unsure about jumping back into the dating scene.
Amerie and Lenny, who once served as her manager, were together since 2007 and tied the knot in 2011. They share a 7-year-old son, River Rowe.
The breakup stayed under wraps, fitting, considering Amerie has always kept her personal life lowkey.
But one thing is clear, Amerie is officially back outside. The R&B favorite recently hit the stage for NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series and lit up the 2025 BET Awards with a performance that reminded everyone why she’s still that girl.
Love might not be in the air right now, but the music definitely is.
