Apple Users May Pay More For iPhones As AI Data Centers Eat Up Memory Chip Supplies

The same AI boom powering smarter devices could make Apple products more expensive.

Apple Users May Pay More For iPhones As AI Data Centers Eat Up Memory Chip Supplies

Apple may be getting ready to pass part of the AI bill to shoppers, and the twist is that the pressure is not just coming from flashy new features. Apple price hikes are now tied to the same memory chip crunch feeding the global AI data center race.

CEO Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal that Apple plans to raise product prices to offset rising memory and storage chip costs. His warning was blunt: “Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable.” Cook added, “We’re doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.”

AI is not only making phones smarter; it may also make them pricier. Reuters reports that AI-driven demand for data centers has pushed consumer electronics companies into tighter competition for memory components, driving costs higher. The pressure is especially sharp in DRAM, the memory used to keep phones and apps running smoothly.

Cook had already signaled the issue earlier this year, saying, “We do continue to see market pricing for memory increasing significantly.” Reuters also reported that Samsung and SK Hynix have been prioritizing high-bandwidth memory for AI servers, squeezing supplies of conventional DRAM used in smartphones and PCs.

For Apple, this lands at a sensitive moment. The company reported $111.2 billion in quarterly revenue for its fiscal second quarter, up 17 percent year over year, while iPhone revenue hit a March quarter record. Cook said demand for the iPhone 17 lineup was “extraordinary,” giving Apple pricing power, but also raising the stakes if higher costs hit the next device cycle.

Still, Apple has not said which products will cost more or when increases will hit. Cook told the Journal, “There’s less supply at a time when consumers want devices and the memory guys are passing along huge price increases.” He added, “We definitely need memory pricing and supply to return to reasonable levels for consumer products.”

So the next Apple upgrade may come with a hidden AI surcharge. The company is selling intelligence, speed, and ecosystem loyalty. However, the bill for the AI arms race may show up right where customers feel it first: the checkout page.
