Authorities in New Jersey say five men have been arrested after a shooting at a high school football playoff game on Friday night left three people wounded.
The gunfire broke out around 8:30 p.m. during the third quarter of the game between the Pleasantville Greyhounds and the Camden Panthers in Pleasantville, according to Police Chief Sean Riggins. Players and spectators ran for cover, and eyewitnesses described a panicked scene with children separated from parents.
Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said a 10 year old child was critically wounded and hospitalized, a 15 year old boy suffered a graze wound and was treated and released, and a 27 year old man was in stable condition and expected to need surgery. Tyner said the shooting had nothing to do with the students and that an innocent child was hurt in the crossfire. He also said the 27 year old man was carrying a gun at the game and was charged with weapons offenses.
Prosecutors say Alvin, 31, is charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses. Michael, 27, Tyrell, 28, Shahid, 27, and Vance, 26, face weapons charges, and Shahid is also charged with eluding police. These are charges, not convictions, and no responses from the men were included in the early reports.
Investigators have not said anything further about a motive beyond the prosecutor’s comments.
