ASAP Rocky slept through the shooting at his Los Angeles home in March and only learned about it afterward. He described the whole thing to Jason Lee on “The Jason Lee Show,” which premiered on BET Wednesday, August 5. Lee brought it up by joking that sleeping through a shootout at your own house is how you know somebody is from the hood. Rocky said he was dumb tired, and pointed out that the neighborhood is quiet enough that you can hear the birds chirping, which is part of why it never registered.

What he kept coming back to was relief. He said he is just so glad that none of his family and none of his neighbors were hit or hurt. Rihanna, their three children and Rihanna’s mother were all inside the house at the time.His account of the shooter is blunt. He said the woman is really sick and has a real problem, and that she was riffing about Cardi B, about Kim Kardashian, about Rihanna. He said she drove all the way from Florida with an AR-15 and let off 20 some odd shots, and that it was dark. He called it sad that somebody that sick would want to do something like that.Two details there do not match what police put on the record, and both are worth noting without making a whole thing of it. LAPD said the shooting happened in daylight, between roughly 1:15 and 1:30 in the afternoon on Sunday, March 8. And investigators recovered seven assault rifle casings, saying seven to nine rounds were fired, with at least four striking the house. He was asleep when it happened and is recalling a day that upended his family, so the gaps track. The motive he describes is also entirely his. Police have never released one, and no reporting has confirmed anything about the shooter ranting about other celebrities.Here is what authorities have said. Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 35, of Orlando, drove a white Tesla to the Beverly Crest home and opened fire with an AR-15 style rifle. Rounds hit the front gate and an Airstream trailer parked in the driveway. Nobody was injured. Officers arrested her at the Sherman Oaks Galleria within about an hour. She was held on roughly $10.2 million bond and pleaded not guilty to attempted murder along with more than a dozen other felony counts. She told detectives she was not attempting murder.Rocky’s reaction to hearing she was in custody is the part of the interview people are quoting. He said he was like Day-Day from “Friday” when he found out she got caught, referencing the Mike Epps character who has no problem calling the police on somebody. He added that he was on some Relly, then immediately clarified that no, that is different, and settled on saying he was just dumb happy.That Relly line carries weight coming from him. ASAP Relli, born Terell Ephron, is the former friend and ASAP Mob associate who accused Rocky of shooting him in Hollywood in 2021 and testified against him at trial. A Los Angeles jury acquitted Rocky on both felony assault counts in February 2025. So for Rocky, being glad about a police arrest is close enough to what Relli did that he caught himself in real time and walked it back.He has said elsewhere in the same interview that the shooting took away a lot of peace and happiness.
