ASAP Rocky speaks on Joe Budden saying Rocky isn’t a “star.”
Back in December, Budden expressed his feelings regarding Rocky’s star quality as a rapper, saying he is a “star in the culture” but not a “star in music.” When Jamil “Mal” Clay described Rocky as a star in music, Budden quickly retorted, “No, he’s not.” “He’s not a star in music! He is a star in his culture – a bright one, a big one,” said Budden. Rory Farrell chimed in in agreement with Budden. “ASAP is a staple in music and a star in the culture. He’s not a star in music,” Farrell said. Afterward, Mal questioned the two on whether or not they thought Rocky could sell out a show at Madison Square Garden, to which they simultaneously replied, “No.”
Of course, the podcasters’ comments made it to headlines and eventually Rocky’s ears, which became topic of discussion when him and his music entourage, #ASAPMob, stopped by “The Breakfast Club.” “That’s his opinion, you know,” Rocky said. “I think it’s contradictions in his statement and flaws, but that’s his opinion. Everybody got opinions.” Rocky was then asked about how he felt about the success of his 2018 album. “Regardless if I liked it or not, it was what it was,” he said. “It was very experimental for me. I don’t care, bro . . . I’mma always experiment and do what I want. I’mma play with sonics. I’mma push it to the next limit.”
Later on in the interview, Rocky discussed a phone conversation he had with #DonaldTrump when he was being detained in Sweden. “I spoke to him to thank him . . . I don’t agree with all the political shit that he does at all, but I was just, like I said, thankful for everyone who supported me in that. Regardless of all the political shit, I kept it very cordial and very respectful,” Rocky said.
