Trump Strikes Deal With Ashli Babbitt’s Family — $30M Lawsuit Over Capitol Shooting Settled To Avoid Trial

The Trump administration is set to pay close to $5 million to the family of Ashli Babbitt, the woman fatally shot while trying to force her way into a secure area of the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021 riot.

The payout settles a $30 million lawsuit filed by Babbitt’s estate and conservative group Judicial Watch. They accused the Capitol Police officer who shot her—Lt. Michael Byrd of negligence.

Investigations by both the Justice Department and Capitol Police had cleared Byrd, stating he acted in self-defense and was protecting members of Congress just steps away from danger. The Justice Department announced in 2021 that Byrd would not face criminal charges, and Capitol Police said his actions were lawful and in line with department policy.

Despite these findings, the settlement does not mean the government admits any wrongdoing. Still, Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger criticized the decision, calling it disappointing and a bad message for officers protecting national leaders.

It’s unclear if this agreement will require changes to the Justice Department’s official stance on the shooting.
