An Atlanta mall will start charging customers to park.
Beginning Monday, Perimeter Mall will implement a new parking policy, charging for parking in about 300 spaces close to the mall’s main entrance. While this affects only a small portion of its 7,000 total parking spots, the cost will be $2 per hour, with a daily cap of $10.
In a show of community support, Brookfield Properties, the mall’s management, has pledged to donate $1 from each parking fee to Fur Kids, a local animal rescue organization.
Although the change is neither permanent nor strictly temporary, officials say it is an experiment they will monitor for its effectiveness. To help navigate the new system, signs have been posted in the designated area to guide shoppers through the payment process.
Perimeter Mall, a beloved shopping hub located at 4400 Ashford Dunwoody Road, is among the region’s first to adopt paid parking. The move follows a slight uptick in mall traffic after a decade of decline. Social media users had strong reactions to the news. Many believe forcing customers to pay to enter a mall is absurd and a pure money grab.
