Auburn University is mourning freshman football player Jakell Mitchell, 18, who was shot and killed at an apartment near campus on Sunday morning, according to local news reports.
Police have reportedly arrested a 22 year old man named Markale in connection with the shooting. Local outlets report he is being held on a $150,000 bond. No further details about the investigation have been released, and the charge is an accusation that has yet to be tested in court.
Reports note that the shooting happened at the University Heights apartment complex, the same complex where two former Auburn football players, Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips, were fatally shot in 2012.
Auburn University released a short statement on Twitter that read, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jakell’s family and friends. Auburn encourages those in need to contact the Division of Student Affairs.”
Jakell’s former high school coach also shared a message of grief, saying the sadness he felt was overwhelming and that his prayers are with the Mitchell family.
Baller Alert sends our condolences to Jakell’s family, friends and teammates.
