Auburn safety Demetruce McNeal has been dismissed from the football team following an arrest on a marijuana possession charge, USA Today reported.
McNeal was charged with second degree possession of marijuana. Former Auburn players Jonathan Evans and Jawara White were arrested and charged with the same offense. A charge is not a conviction, and no response from McNeal had been reported at the time of this post.
Head coach Gus Malzahn announced the decision in a statement, saying, “After visiting with Demetruce, I made the decision to dismiss him from our team.” Malzahn also said the program expects its players to meet high standards both on and off the field.
The move comes just as McNeal was getting ready for his senior season, which means Auburn will take the field without him this fall.
