The U.S. State Department just updated its travel advisory for The Bahamas, putting the island on Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution due to a rise in violent crime.
According to the updated guidance, areas such as Nassau and Freeport have seen surges in armed robberies, residential break-ins, and sexual assaults. A particularly concerning zone in Nassau, known as “Over the Hill” (located south of Shirley Street), has experienced deadly gang-related violence.
If you’re booking a vacation rental, double-check for private security. The advisory specifically calls out spots without it as higher risk.
Water lovers, this one’s for you. The U.S. government has flagged potential dangers with jet skiing, boating, and swimming activities. Some operators have been found to be unlicensed and uninsured, leading to incidents involving injuries and even fatalities.
Beaches also come with their own warnings: shark sightings, risky jet ski zones, and creepy incidents near downtown Nassau. And sadly, there’s been a rise in sexual assault reports, especially involving jet ski operators.
Another important caution: carrying firearms or ammunition into The Bahamas is strictly prohibited. Several U.S. travelers have been detained and forced to remain on the island for days due to violations of this law.
