Baller Alert reported first, based on sources at the time

Baller Alert reported this first. On the day Meek Mill took to Twitter about Wale, sources told Baller Alert their version of how the two Maybach Music Group rappers ended up here. Everything below is what those sources described to us. Neither artist had publicly confirmed these details when we published, and both are welcome to respond.

Both artists are signed to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group. According to our sources, there had been tension between them for a few years, rooted in competition and jealousy over how each was treated within the MMG family. Sources said the two first became close after Meek stood up for Wale during an incident outside a nightclub in Washington, DC.

The tension was visible on camera in 2011, when Bossip’s red carpet interview with Meek at the BET Hip Hop Awards was interrupted by Wale.

Our sources said things came to a head during the 2012 MMG tour featuring Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Wale and Machine Gun Kelly. Wale was reportedly the opening act for Meek, and sources said he voiced complaints about opening when the tour stopped in his hometown of Washington, DC. Sources also described a physical confrontation backstage over the issue, which neither rapper has publicly confirmed.

Sources also pointed to differences in how the two were positioned within MMG. Meek runs his own Dreamchasers label alongside his MMG deal, while Wale reportedly wanted more room to build his own roster. Most recently, sources noted that Wale was not among the invited guests at Meek’s Ciroc hosted dinner during BET Awards weekend in Los Angeles, where guests heard music from his upcoming album.

On July 8, 2014, Meek posted a series of tweets criticizing Wale, saying Wale had not promoted his upcoming album, Dreams Worth More Than Money, and using the hashtag #UNOTMMG, according to Billboard. Wale responded on Instagram, saying he had supported Meek and had texted him on Father’s Day without a reply, and that he does not need to fit a mold. He said he has no interest in hating on anyone.

We will keep you posted if either artist says more.
