Dr. Madhu Subramanian

Johns Hopkins Medicine

A Baltimore doctor on his way to work at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center was shot on Friday during an attempted carjacking.

Dr. Madhu Subramanian, 38, is a surgeon and assistant professor of surgery at the hospital. He was shot during his morning commute, just after 7:00 a.m.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Subramanian was not seriously injured during the shooting and was treated and released.

“With his permission, we can share that Dr. Madhu Subramanian, a trauma and acute care surgeon, was on his way to work at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center when the incident occurred near the 3600 block of Loch Raven Boulevard,” Johns Hopkins said in an email to staff. “Thankfully, Dr. Subramanian was not seriously injured and has been treated and released.”

A fellow surgeon, Joseph Sakran, tweeted about treating a colleague, writing, “Our fellow trauma surgeon was just shot” and that the victim was on his way to the trauma center. He wrote that he was “numb” and in “disbelief” over the situation.

After walking in for Trauma call this AM, my colleague called with the most unexpected message.

Joe, are you on call?

Yes

Our fellow trauma surgeon was just shot and he is on his way to the trauma center.

Listening to that communication, I was frankly numb and in disbelief.

— Joseph Sakran (@JosephSakran) April 1, 2022

Sakran was shot while in high school when he was hit by a stray bullet. He is now a gun violence prevention advocate.

Carjackings are on the rise in Baltimore, up 67 percent from the same time last year. Authorities have not made public any other information regarding this incident and are asking anyone with information to call Northeast District detectives at 410-396-2444.
