Being single is not a waiting room. It is a chance to rebuild the person you will bring to your next relationship.
A lot of us jump from one relationship to the next because we are afraid of being alone. We carry the last disappointment into the new situation and hope the next person fixes what was missing. It rarely works, because what was missing was often something we needed to work on ourselves.
The newest numbers show more people are choosing a different path. A Harris Poll Singles in America survey released in February 2026 found 54 percent of singles would rather stay single than go looking for companionship, up five points from 2023. Single women led the way, with 59 percent saying they prefer being alone compared with 51 percent of single men. Match’s 15th annual Singles in America study with the Kinsey Institute, released in September 2026, found 52.4 percent of singles say they are happier on their own than they were in past relationships, and only 16 percent said they were actively looking for something serious.
So if you are on your own right now, you are in good company. In the Harris survey, 85 percent of single women agreed that being single is a lifestyle, not a waiting room. It can be a full season of life instead of a gap between relationships.
Here is what that time can do for you. When Harris asked singles what they would focus on during three years on their own, saving money topped the list at 51 percent, followed by hobbies and creative projects at 42 percent and friendships at 36 percent. You can finish the goal you shelved when someone else needed your attention. You can save money, rest, rebuild friendships, and travel without checking a calendar with anyone. Most of all, you can figure out what you want and what you refuse to tolerate, which makes your next choice a lot sharper.
Some people will call that selfish. Choosing yourself for a season is not selfish, it is maintenance. You cannot pour into a partner when you are empty, and you cannot choose well when you are rushing to fill a silence.
If someone cannot respect your decision to be on your own for a while, that says more about them than it does about you. Set the boundary, change the subject, and keep moving. Nobody gets a vote on how long you take.
Made to order and shipped to your door.
You do not have to prove you are over the last person by finding the next one. Be single on purpose, put yourself first, and you will date better when you are ready.
