Rapper BigXthaPlug found himself in handcuffs the same day he dropped his latest album, “I Hope You’re Happy,” and says the experience felt more like a strange listening party than an interrogation.

During a recent Twitch stream, the 26-year-old revealed that police identified him in their system as a gang member. “

They said it could go two ways,” he recalled. “Either I go straight to jail, or go to headquarters for a few questions. I said, ‘Okay, bet.’”

Once there, things took a bizarre turn.

“They talked to me for like four hours and just kept playing my music,” BigXthaPlug said. “They played ‘Safehouse’ and I’m like, ‘Bruh, y’all trying to lock me up over a beat?’ Everything they asked, I had answers for. So I told them, ‘Y’all just wanna take me to jail.’”

Eventually, he grew tired of the back-and-forth. “I told them, ‘Turn that off. Just take me to jail,’” he said. He was booked on marijuana possession and unlawful firearm charges, then released the next day on a $5,000 bond.

His attorney, Valerie Baston, told CBS News they’re working to keep the charges as misdemeanors.

“It just is what it is,” she said. “People are trying to make it a felony.”

BigXthaPlug missed his album release party but is pushing forward. I Hope You’re Happy” includes features from Jelly Roll, Shaboozey, and Luke Combs, showcasing country-influenced rap vibes that appeal to two very unique audiences.
