A viral video shows a white woman wearing blackface at Burger King telling a Black customer who confronted her that she just wants to be Black.
Video:
In the video, the customer questions the woman, who has her face painted dark, about what she said to him before he started recording. Her first answer is short. “I’m just black,” she says.
The customer then reminds her that he asked whether she thought her look was okay. She told him it was fine “as long as you have a good heart.”
He pushes back on the idea that good intentions make it acceptable, and she makes her goal plain. “Well, no, I just want to be black,” she says.
That is when the customer asks the question at the center of the whole exchange. “Why would you want to be black? Do you know the struggles that we go through as black people?”
The woman apologizes and says the moment is making her laugh, then tries to answer. She first says she does understand, then reverses herself. “No, yes, yes, I do. Or I mean, no, I don’t. No, I don’t. No, I don’t,” she says.

Blackface traces back to minstrel shows, where white performers darkened their skin to mock Black people, and it has been called out as racist for generations. The woman in this video defended it as a matter of having a good heart, then could not say she understood what Black people actually go through.
It is not clear where the video was filmed, when it happened or who the woman is.
