During Election night Black Lives Matter Activist Cori Bush became Missouri’s first black congresswoman after she garnered a whopping 84 percent of the vote in the states 1st Congressional District.
During her acceptance speech, she told her supporters, “This is definitely a night to remember.” She said, “This has been a historic day from the beginning to the end.”
Bush was backed by the Justice Democrats who helped propel Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to her first upset victory over 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley.
In August Bush has her own upset victory, defeating longtime incumbent, Missouri Rep. William Lacy Clay.
In 2014, Bush got involved with the Black Lives Matter movement when unarmed black teen Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson.
Bush joined the protests that erupted in the wake of the shooting and she soon began taking lead in the protests in the Missouri district
She has remained engaged in protest work ever since, getting heavily involved in the recent protests surrounding the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
