Back in April, upon his release after a five-month stint in prison, Meek Mill promised to be a vessel for the voiceless. Months later, using his own experience as a product of the flawed system, the rapper teamed up with heavy hitters in the music, sports and business industry to launch a criminal justice reform organization to continue his fight for criminal justice reform.
Despite the hard work Meek Mill has put in, one person, in particular, who is currently serving time for his own transgressions, isn’t necessarily convinced it will be enough to make a change.
“Like I tell people all the time, I respect what he’s doing. I can’t do it though,” Bobby Shmurda said in a phone interview with SiriusXM’s Hip Hop Nation. “I can talk to the kids, but I ain’t about to be sitting here protesting and politicking for no motherfucking cops because them motherfuckers don’t care. They been killing motherfuckers since Rodney King.”
As he continued, he explained why he respected historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr, and how his experiences align with Meek Mill’s.
“I tell people all the time, like a positive person I’ve seen, like Martin Luther King,” the Brooklyn-bred rapper said. “I love what Martin Luther King did. I respect him because I couldn’t do it. Motherfuckers hitting him with rocks, doing all types of shit, and he stayed positive. I can’t do it, know what I mean? I’ll come talk to the kids. That’s about it. But I respect everything that they do.”
“It’s not even about me going through shit. It’s about what they been doing for years. Shit ain’t gonna change because motherfuckers start talking about it, we gotta take action,” he continued. “But these motherfuckers ain’t gonna listen. They been beating Rodney King, they been killing motherfuckers for how long? They been getting the same results. This shit is crazy. The most I can tell them is stay up outta jail, and get some money in they pockets that’s about it.”
The rapper is expected to be released from prison late next year.
