It’s no secret Brandy and Monica’s names have been tied together since the ’90s, mostly because of their hit record and the long trail of rumors that followed it.
But now, after years of side comments, subtle shade, and plenty of missed moments, the two R&B powerhouses are finally taking their talents on the road.
The Boy Is Mine Tour is officially happening. It launches October 16 and will hit 24 cities before wrapping on December 7. Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and American Idol’s newest champ Jamal Roberts are all joining the lineup.
Brandy and Monica sat down with Gayle King on CBS Mornings and got honest about why this took so long. “They were trying to get us to do a tour since ’98,” Brandy said. “It just finally felt like the right time.”
This tour isn’t just a throwback moment. Sure, their iconic 1998 single has new life thanks to Ariana Grande’s remix and Grammy buzz, but both women made it clear this is about growth.
“There was a lot of confusion and conflict, and there was a lot of people around,” Monica said, pointing out how outside voices made things messy. Brandy followed with, “The song didn’t help. We were fighting over a boy.” Monica couldn’t help but laugh and added, “We don’t even like the same type of boy. There could never have been a boy.”
They admitted the tension grew as the years passed and said part of the issue was never really speaking to each other directly. “It did turn into something,” Monica said.
Once they blocked out the background noise, they were finally able to have real conversations and move forward.
Now they’re calling it a “musical marriage.” Monica said the energy between them is different and intentional this time. “We created the communication and the relationship to do it,” she said.
For fans who’ve been waiting for this moment since they were teenagers, it’s not just a tour, it’s a full-circle moment that proves sometimes legends just need time to align.
