A British woman has been charged with money laundering after border officers reportedly found nearly £2 million in cash in five suitcases at Heathrow Airport. According to reports, the cash was headed to Dubai.
Tara, 30, was stopped by Border Force officials at Heathrow, The Sun reported. Authorities described it as the largest individual cash seizure at the UK border so far in 2020.
Chris Philp, the UK minister for immigration compliance and the courts, said preventing undeclared cash from leaving the country is “a vital step” in clamping down on organized criminal gangs.
Tara appeared before Uxbridge magistrates and was ordered held in custody until November 5, when she is due at Isleworth Crown Court. According to The Sun, money laundering carries a maximum sentence of up to 14 years. No plea or statement from Tara was included in the reports we reviewed, and a charge is not a conviction.
