A late-night traffic stop in Southern California has now turned into a legal situation for Britney Spears, who is facing a misdemeanor DUI charge weeks after her arrest.
Authorities say the incident traces back to March 4, when California Highway Patrol officers responded to a 911 call reporting an erratic driver along the 101 Freeway near Newbury Park. Officers located the vehicle, identified as a BMW 430i, and conducted a stop after it exited near Westlake Village. Spears, who was the only person in the car, was taken into custody and later released.
Prosecutors in Ventura County have since outlined a potential path forward under California’s “wet reckless” law, typically applied in cases involving low blood-alcohol levels and no injuries. In a statement, officials said, “This law allows a defendant to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs.” They added, “This type of resolution is common, particularly when a defendant demonstrates self-motivation to address underlying issues through rehabilitation or a drug and alcohol treatment program.”
If accepted, the agreement would include 12 months of probation, DUI classes, fines, and credit for time already served. The offer is expected to be formally presented during her scheduled arraignment.
Following the arrest, Spears’ representative addressed the situation directly, stating, “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.” The statement continued, “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”
Shortly after the incident, Spears voluntarily entered a treatment facility. Further details about her stay have not been disclosed.
