Broward County schools will implement a clear backpack policy to help protect staff and students.

Days ago, the Broward County School District announced that only clear backpacks and bags would be allowed on school grounds. Surprisingly, this new policy will not apply to teachers, staff, volunteers, or school visitors. Broward County School Board Chair Lori Alhadeff says this move will allow others to see and report any suspicious items brought to academies.

Students can wear clear bags such as fanny packs, purses, and totes. Even lunch boxes must be see-through. The rule applies to any student in grades pre-K through 12th grade. Any mesh bags, even if transparent, are not permitted. Broward County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Earlean Smiley called this latest set of guidelines a “game-changer.” She also believes this move will serve as a “deterrent” for anyone considering committing violent acts or bringing weapons on school grounds.

There are only a few exceptions to the rule. A small solid pouch for personal hygiene items is allowed, along with thermal food containers only to be held inside clear lunch boxes. Sports equipment carrying cases must be approved by school officials. Instrument cases will also undergo the same review and approval process. Some students believe the policy will only motivate others to find new ways to conceal weapons. Student Javien Sutherland made a valid point, stating that guns could be concealed in jackets or pockets. Parents have also voiced their concerns, calling the rule an invasion of privacy.

Nevertheless, the school board is not budging on its decision. The clear bag rule will go into effect on the first day of the 2023/24 school year.
