California Gov. Newsom

California Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to use pandemic relief funds to cover all unpaid rent for low-income Californians.

Democratic governor, Newsom, 53, is facing a recall Republicans are spearheading. And in the midst of that, he is trying to get the state legislature to approve his plan to use $5.2 billion in federal pandemic relief money to pay 100 percent of unpaid rent that low-income Californians owe, CNN reports.

In addition, he’s also pushing for low-income Californians to receive $600 stimulus checks, funding for the homeless to have new housing, and more. This all comes after a surplus of funds after the state received more than $27 billion from the American Rescue Plan, which passed in March. In addition, California was given $4.7 billion in federal funds to go toward rental assistance.

As the GOP tries to get Newsom out, only four in 10 people say they would recall Newsom. So far, Republicans have gathered 1.4 million valid signatures that needed to launch a recall. Caitlyn Jenner is set to run against Newsom.

Republicans’ attempt to remove Newsome comes after alleged dissatisfaction with his actions and restrictions during the state’s lockdown.
