Oakland police say a 75 year old man named Pak has died after he was attacked and robbed during his morning walk, and a 26 year old man named Teaunte has been charged in the case.
According to the Oakland Police Department, the attack happened on a Tuesday morning at the intersection of Jayne Avenue and Perkins Street. NBC News reported that Pak suffered severe head injuries and died on Thursday. Police arrested Teaunte in connection with the assault and robbery, and prosecutors have charged him with special circumstance murder, first degree robbery and assault. According to the criminal complaint, the special circumstance allegation relates to crimes against elders. A charge is an allegation, and Teaunte is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Police also said Teaunte has a history of targeting elderly Asian people. He was separately charged over a February 19 incident in which he allegedly entered a senior living apartment, shoved a 72 year old resident and took items from the home.
Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said, “Our elders should be protected, not the victim of a deadly assault.”
A spokesperson for Pak’s family, identified as Chan, said the family believes the case should be treated as a hate crime. Police have not said whether they consider it a hate crime or a crime of opportunity. No response from Teaunte was reported.
