On Friday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that he would lead a plan to transform San Quentin State Prison into a rehabilitation facility.
According to the Associated Press, California’s notorious state prison has the largest death row population in the country.
The prison is expected to be transformed into a lockup facility providing education, training, and rehabilitation for “less-dangerous” inmates.
It will reportedly be renamed “San Quentin Rehabilitation Center,” and its current inmates are expected to be transferred to other California prisons.
“Improving public safety” is the goal of San Quentin State Prison’s transformation, Newsom said.
During his state tour, the governor will visit San Quentin State Prison at noon on Friday to discuss a proposed prison transformation.
