A California woman has been charged with felony attempted kidnapping after police say she posed as a social worker in an effort to take a newborn baby.
According to FOX LA, Sara, 38, was charged on Tuesday with one felony count of attempted kidnapping of a child under the age of 14 and one felony count of attempted taking of a minor from a parent or legal custodian. If convicted, she could face up to seven and a half years in a California prison.
Police say that on June 7, Sara knocked on the door of a Santa Ana home and claimed to be an employee of Orange County social services. Police allege she tried to convince the mother to hand over her one week old infant, saying doctors had accused the mother of abuse. She reportedly could not provide any identification to back up the claim.
Police say Sara threatened to call the police if the mother did not hand over the baby. The mother grew suspicious, and her sister began recording the encounter.
The Santa Ana Police Department released the footage to the public in an effort to identify the woman. Sara turned herself in, was arrested, and was released a few days later after posting $100,000 bail.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said, “The safety of our children is paramount,” and reminded parents of newborns to stay alert about anyone around their children.
Sara is scheduled to be arraigned on July 8. The charges are allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Baller Alert did not find a response from her at the time of this report.
