Canada is making it clear it is absolutely not for sale, despite Donald Trump expressing his interest in merging the country with the United States.

In a firm rebuke during an Oval Office meeting Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared, “It’s not for sale, it won’t be for sale, ever,” after Trump romanticized the idea of a U.S.-Canada union, calling the border “artificial” and suggesting a “wonderful marriage” would yield “tremendous” benefits. Trump, invoking his real estate background, said, “When you get rid of that artificially drawn line… I’m a very artistic person.”

Carney cut in, using language tailored for Trump: “As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale. We’re sitting in one right now… And having met with the owners of Canada…it won’t be for sale, ever.”

The meeting followed Carney’s election victory, where he vowed to reset ties with the U.S., saying the old model of deep integration “is over.”
